In 1980 Elise and Steve Seyfried began performing their own
two-actor, story theatre plays. Their first show was THE WIZARD OF OZ. Since
that time Duet Productions has grown steadily. Their organization currently
features a roster of several performers, all of whom work in the
"duet" format.
This husband and wife team have developed a dynamic and
fun-filled style of theatre. Their shows are fast-paced and directed toward all
members of their audience, children and parents alike. The plays feature
lightning-quick costume changes and a broad sense of humor. Elise and Steve have
collaborated on eleven children's theatre adaptations ranging from such popular
titles as CINDERELLA, PETER PAN and SNOW WHITE to more unusual material - THE MAGIC FLUTE,
THE LEGEND OF FINN McCOOL and JARED'S ISLAND.
As their business has grown, so also has their family. The
Seyfrieds have five children, who occupy much of Elise's time. Steve has taken
over much of the writing and directing responsibilities. He has concentrated
more recently on educational programs for schools, producing historical scripts
(THE COLUMBUS DAY SAIL, WOMEN OF THE WEST, MILLENNIMU MILESTONES) and folktales
from around the world including THE SILVER PHOENIX (China), ANDROCLES AND THE
LION (Greece), PUSS IN BOOTS (France) and RIP VAN WINKLE (America). In a joint
project with Dairy Council, Inc., Steve has written and produced THE MARVELOUS
MACHINE, a show on nutrition. He has also written and performs a one-man show on
the history of clowns.
In addition to the touring, Steve and Elise have founded
two organizations to produce their shows in public venues. In 1982 they started
the Rehoboth Summer Children's Theatre on the Delaware Shore. This series
encompasses an eleven week repertory season in addition to workshops and
outreach programs for the residents and visitors of Southern Delaware. In the
winter they produce the Family Stages Series in Oreland, PA. These shows attract
the public at large and are very popular with school groups as well. When all
these activities are combined, Duet Productions logs over 400 performances each
year.
The Seyfrieds' theatrical activities are not limited
to children's theatre. They have also
written comedy revues including TWO OFF THE AISLE and PARENTS "R" US.
Elise and Steve have written the lyrics for the musical FLIGHT, based on the
early life of Howard Hughes. Steve has also written the book for this show. In
April of 1999 the Seyfrieds were presented a Stanley Drama Award by Terrence
McNally for their work on FLIGHT.
Steve's other writings include two
historical plays THE BALANCING ACT and THE GEORGETOWN HUNDRED, and one
full-length large-cast children's show TROUBLE, adapted from the writings of
Delaware illustrator and author Howard Pyle.
The shows of Duet Productions reflect the Seyfrieds'
commitment to top quality programs for family audiences. Their material combines
enrichment and entertainment in a delightful package.
